The university was founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in memory of their only child, Leland Stanford Jr., who had died of typhoid fever at age 15 the previous year.[2] Stanford was a U.S. Senator and former Governor of California who made his fortune as a railroad tycoon. The school admitted its first students on October 1, 1891,[2][3] as a coeducational and non-denominational institution. Stanford University struggled financially after the death of Leland Stanford in 1893 and again after much of the campus was damaged by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.[17] Following World War II, Provost Frederick Terman supported faculty and graduates' entrepreneurialism to build self-sufficient local industry in what would later be known as Silicon Valley.[18] The university is also one of the top fundraising institutions in the country, becoming the first school to raise more than a billion dollars in a year.[19] The university is organized around seven schools: three schools consisting of 40 academic departments at the undergraduate level as well as four professional schools that focus on graduate programs in law, medicine, education, and business. All schools are on the same campus. Students compete in 36 varsity sports, and the university is one of two private institutions in the Division I FBS Pac-12 Conference. It has gained 126 NCAA team championships,[20] and Stanford has won the NACDA Directors' Cup for 24 consecutive years, beginning in 1994–1995.[21] In addition, Stanford students and alumni have won 270 Olympic medals including 139 gold medals.[22] As of March 2020, 83 Nobel laureates, 28 Turing Award laureates,[note 1] and 8 Fields Medalists have been affiliated with Stanford as students, alumni, faculty, or staff.[43] In addition, Stanford University is particularly noted for its entrepreneurship and is one of the most successful universities in attracting funding for start-ups.[44][45][46][47][48] Stanford alumni have founded numerous companies, which combined produce more than $2.7 trillion in annual revenue and have created 5.4 million jobs as of 2011, roughly equivalent to the 7th largest economy in the world (as of 2020).[49][50][51] Stanford is the alma mater of one president of the United States (Herbert Hoover), 30 living billionaires, and 17 astronauts.[52] It is also one of the leading producers of members of the United States Congress.[53]

I would say one the greatest university of USA is this university! I was a part of a educational tour from my school in India & we as a group visited this place as a part of our tour. This is place is really nice. Higher standards of hygiene are maintained here! And as I talked to few students, this place seems to be best in terms of education too! This place have a dinosaur model . I really liked that model. I had fun with my guys here & am sharing few of my pics too!

It's Massive and has enough land to build into a Vatican like small metropolis. It looks like that may be the long term goal. One tiny issue, there is ZERO parking around the Papua New Guinea sculpture garden. I was only there about 20 minutes and the groundsworker had called security, which showed after I pulled away. I was parked in the only place NOT between two no parking signs. That said, the security personnel at the visitor center were awesome, and even offered me a bottled water on this scorcher of a day. Stanford is Stanford. Never lacking in funds by appearances. Hard to find non-permit parking, (always keeping local riff-raff out). Beautiful place to drive, bike or walk around. Of course it will be interesting to see how long it will take for them to reconsider some of the patron dedications for future generations. A lovely historical place overall.
