Taronga Western Plains Zoo, formerly known as Western Plains Zoo and commonly known as Dubbo Zoo, is a large zoo near Dubbo, New South Wales, Australia. It opened to the public on 28 February 1977, to provide more living and breeding space for large animals such as elephants and antelopes which needed more space than was available at the restricted Sydney site. Great zoo, good mix of animals, with plenty to keep the kids entertained. We were a bit unsure, but you can (and is normal to) drive your own car around inside the zoo. A lot of families ride their own bikes around, but we were quite rudely told that scooters were not allowed. The food and drink pricing was pretty standard but cans of soft drink were astronomical.

We experienced 2 wonderful days at TWP Zoo recently, staying overnight at Zoofari Lodge. Accommodation was stylish and comfortable, dinner at The Guesthouse with our fellow travellers was delicious as it was generous. Thank you Chef John Sullivan. The staff are lovely. Absolutely world class. Looking forward to our next visit.

Fantastic place. We split our visit over two days which was a great way to see everything. It means you can take your time at each stop without feeling rushed. The food at the half way stop was better than the usual fried stuff for this kind of place. The water park will be great when complete. Hired a golf cart on the first day, but 3 hours was a little too short. It was good fun but doesn't have any advantage over taking the car. Definitely the place to come and see the big animals (rhino/elephant/lion/tiger/hippo). They seemed to have plenty of space and the viewing areas are up on banks so easy to observe them even when crowded.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo is a fantastic place. I would recommend driving your car through the zoo, rather than paying for a buggy. parking throughout the zoo and you can walk around a bit from where you have parked. Can take your own car or bike, can walk it or can hire bikes and carts. Nice and open which makes you feel a lot closer to the animals Thanks ????

Large and well maintained zoo. Must visit for people new to Dubbo. Kids will have a lot of fun. Recommend getting annual family membership so you can visit the zoo multiple times. They also have multiple options to choose from on how one would like to go around the zoo. Car, hire bicycle for kids, adults and cycle with provision for toddlers and electric golf kart. They also have a good size cafe midway and kids play area near the exit.
