My daughter has been taking creative writing lessons at The Writers Circle since she was 15. That is the year we moved to Montclair. She loves going to her classes a lot as it is both nurturing and a supportive environment. Every time she comes back from a lesson, she is very happy and inspired. She loves the kids and the instructors there. She has been doing weekly classes and Summer Intensives since 2015. She was offered internship for the last two years and she enjoyed helping kids at The Summer Intensives. Judith and Michelle are wonderful guiding the kids and supporting them academically and socially. They are amazing teachers and super fun women. My daughter grew academically and socially at The Writers Circle. Her Creative Writing Skills and writing skills in general improved more. As a high school senior, she is still doing the weekly classes and looking forward to do internship during Summer Intensives. I highly recommend The Writers Circle.
The first class I took at The Writers Circle was called Where Do I Begin, and it was an eye-opener. I became aware of story elements like plot, character, setting and structure. I loved it. From there I moved to Beginning Your Novel where we looked further into all those elements plus dialogue, description, and conflict. It became more exciting. Then I joined Continuing Your Novel where I began to put things together. I am currently enrolled in The Novel Continuum with Michelle. She is insightful, encouraging, and direct. She can spot places where you can improve your writing and she tells you in a very supportive manner, always building on your confidence. My classmates are also amazing. They always have great feedback. Thanks to this class I've grown as a writer and have become accountable. I don't think I would have written half of what I have. I'm at the 75% mark of my first draft, and this has been a journey I will never forget thanks to the Writers Circle and its amazing group of teachers.
If you're looking for supportive classes that will make you into a better writer, this is the place to go. The Writers Circle has great teachers, and they keep class sizes small, allowing for plenty of individual attention. I've taken novel-writing classes with Michelle for four years, and she's such an insightful, direct, and encouraging teacher. I credit her classes with helping me to continue writing even when life circumstances threatened to get in the way. And, to my delight, my classmates have become my dear friends.
TL;DR: For writing classes in NJ, this is the place to be.
If you are located in northern New Jersey and you love to write then you should come to The Writer's Circle. Judy and Michelle have built a community that helps every writer flourish whatever their interest or style. I have been with the adult critique group for more than a decade. The support and feedback from the group has improved my storytelling skills enormously and encouraged me to finally submit work for publication. I love The Writer's Circle, and I have taken classes there for over a decade. I find the classes are supportive but not uncritical; there is a group wisdom in hearing the critique of others. And when I sold my book, Judy, who is a published author, helped me greatly with some of the technical questions about publishing and such. I recommend The Writer's Circle wholeheartedly!
